Is IP Communications as secure as a PABX?

There are risks that need to be considered in both the planning and deployment stages of any project that converges voice and data, and possibly video, onto one network. Adding voice into the data network exposes it to data and systems vulnerabilities.

Telephony services are also generally mission-critical services, and are extremely network delay and loss sensitive.

The security risks associated with VOIP implementations can be classified into three primary types:
•           service availability
•           confidentiality
•           system integrity

The good news is that these can all be addressed and mitigated through a secure architecture. By addressing security around IP Communications, you’re also strengthening the overall security around the network and reducing business risk for the organization.

Vendors are continuing to improve in the area of security with encryption of data and secure access points.  They are all at various stages of development.

A Unified Communications system can be as secure, or even more secure, than traditional PBX systems because they combine IP communications security techniques with network security technologies enabling all aspects of the network to work as a secure, unified system. Many of the UC applications currently available can be deployed on legacy PABX systems within a network.  It is not necessary to rip and replace existing systems to implement UC.
